Indoor Environmental Quality and Consumption Patterns before and during the COVID-19 Lockdown in Twelve Social Dwellings in Madrid, Spain

This article analyses the situation that prevailed in 12 dwellings located on outskirts of Madrid during Spain’s state emergency. How did 24/7 occupation affect quality indoor air and power consumption patterns? The mixed method used (surveys instrumental monitoring) pragmatically detected variation consumption, comfort patterns before COVID-19 pandemic. characteristics initially place household predisposition had a conclusive effect such variations. starting conditions, including composition, habits way daily activities were performed, differed widely, logically affecting consumption: 8/12 case studies increase occupancy density by more than 25 percent; 11/12 improve thermal comfort; 10/12 but not necessarily translate sufficient ventilation practices; was lower bedrooms whole; only 4/12 use potential passive measures; one adopted energy savings strategies; electric none fitted with renewable generation system. conclusion drawn is that, despite conditions differing (including performance performance) also played an active role end result. approach allowed to integrate qualitative quantitative findings environmental (IEQ), households’ behavior. objective data useful for study, enrollment rehabilitation programs, as European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
